I Know Who Holds Tomorrow
The scariest place to be is somewhere you don't know. You are no longer in control, and you don’t know how to get back to your safe zone. This fear in physical and spiritual situations creates the same reaction - runaway. If you go back to where you were, you will be safe and have more control. Spiritually, this is the wrong answer. The only choice is to go forward in faith, humbly acknowledging that you don't know where you're going or how to get there! It is here that God can do the most with you and prepare you for your journey.
For example, I am a recent high school graduate in no man's land between childhood and adulthood. Honestly, I’m not sure where I’m going. I have a three-semester plan, but at the end of this plan, everything is dark. I don't know what I am doing. You will be surprised to find out that God does not give you a calendar with all his plans for you. But I know that even though I don't know what I am going to do, God does. I would love to know what is ahead, but I am not in constant fear of the unknown because I know God is in control, and I will know what I need to in His time.
In life, there will be times when you will not know where you are headed and will start wishing for God to give us that calendar. During those times is when you will find what your faith is made of and who you truly trust. If you have sincere faith you will continue following God even though you don't know where you are going. Proverbs 3:5 says - Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Fear and doubts will tell us to turn back; they will say you were happy and safe. But the only thing behind you now is a life of regret instead of a life of fulfillment that only comes from following God. Psalm 16:11 says - “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”
God’s direction will not come in a dream or in that calendar that we all want. Paraphrasing pastor Carry Schmitt, God is not going to hide his will from you. He may not give it all, but He will give what you need. When you are in the right place spiritually, you will not miss God’s will, and I won't either. To know God's will you must pray, be willing to listen, and have faith in God.
It takes humility to say God's will and plan for you is more important than your own, but it's necessary. His plan is far better than ours. We may not like where He is taking us or how He is doing it, but ultimately it will be for His glory and our good. Jeremiah 29:11 says - For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Do not turn back and run to the safe zone. (If you physically are lost, by all means, run back to where you were.) Trust God to lead you; I imagine He knows where He is taking you. Do not rob yourself of the blessings of God.
